Laminitis > Laminitic at Liphook Vets (7)
-
Right Front Pre-shoeing
This is a chronic laminitic. You can see how distorted his feet get at the end of a shoeing cycle. This is typical of a severe laminitic. You get accelerated growth of the heels and due to the damage at the front of the foot there is very little stability in the hoof wall as the laminae has lost it's strong bond with the pedal bone.

Left Front Pre-shoeing
This pony was last shod 8 weeks before this picture was taken to a very high standard. It just goes to show you can't judge the previous farrier on their shoeing at the end of the shoeing cycle as a lot can change in a couple of months.
-
Front of the wall
This picture shows the dead stretched laminae at the front of the foot that has severely suffered from blood starvation.
-
Right Front Post-shoeing
So after the shoeing you can see the huge improvement. His feet were supported with an EDSS Kit. (The Equine Digital Support System) This is an adjustable shoeing system that allows you to change the height of the heels and amount of frog height and pressure once the shoe is in place.
-
Left Front Post-shoeing
Again this foot is looking much better already.
-
Front of the wall Post-shoeing
You can still see the tearing of the laminae, but all the flare and distortion has now been addressed.

EDSS Shoe
This is an Aluminium EDSS Shoe with a pad that is pulled away from the tip of the pedal bone via a screw so as not to cause any pressure. Impression material is used in the back third of the foot to give a support platform where the foot is not sore. Then a frog insert was attached to the pad to help take more load in the non-sensitive areas.
