Crack
This is a complete and complicated crack (meaning that it runs the whole length of the foot, involving the sensitive structures). Every time this horse bears weight the crack opens and when it lifts it's leg up it pinches the underlying sensitive structures.
-
De-greasing
Because were going to need to use an adhesive on the foot it needs cleaning thoroughly. Here a de-greaser is being used. Once this has been applied you shouldn't even touch the foot with your hands as the moisture from your hands will have an affect on how well the glue cures.
-
Protecting against infection
Here the crack has been filled with Keratex Hoof Putty which is a soft putty that the adhesive won't stick too. If infection were to occur there is now an escape route for any puss to get out. It is also anti-bacterial so will keep it all clean.

Fixing Crack Patch
The Crack Patch has been shaped to mold around the hoof wall. The surface has been roughened with a file to give the adhesive more to grip too, and de-greaser has also been applied to the patch. The patch is then glued and screwed on with about 20 screws. The idea being to immobilise the crack and stop the painful pinching problem.
-
Finished Patch
You can see more glue has been smothered all over the patch to hold it secure. This doesn't necessarily need to be re-done at the next shoeing if it is still securely in place. It's important to note the top of the crack hasn't been covered in glue incase infection occurs there is somewhere for it to escape.
